The problem is not that these are cheap. The problem is that they are about a category, not a person. A Scorpio mug is a gift for every Scorpio alive. There are roughly six hundred million of them.
What separates a real astrology gift from a zodiac-themed one
A birth chart is not your sign. Your sign is one placement out of a dozen. A chart is the entire sky at the minute and the place you were born, and no two people share one unless they were born in the same hospital at the same moment.
That is the difference. A zodiac gift says you are a Scorpio. A chart says here is where Venus was, here is what that means for how you love, and here is the sentence about you that nobody else gets.
A good astrology gift has three things going for it.
It is specific to them. Not to their sign, to them. Their date, their time, their city.
It says something. A chart wheel on its own is a diagram. Beautiful, but it needs to be read. The gift lands when there are words next to it.
It is not disposable. A candle burns down. A print goes on a wall and stays there.
For a parent or grandparent
This is the one that works best, and it is not close. Most people over fifty have never seen their own birth chart. They may know their sign from a newspaper column decades ago and nothing beyond it.

A 53 is not a 53 percent
This is worth stopping on, because almost everyone gets it wrong the first time, and it is the single most common question we get.
The numbers in a couples score are not percentages and they are not test grades. Nobody is being marked out of a hundred. School trained all of us to read 53 as barely scraping a pass, and that instinct is simply the wrong tool here.
What the number actually describes is where you sit among other couples. A 53 on Venus means that when your two charts are measured against a large reference set of couples in your exact situation, you land ahead of about 53 percent of them on that one axis. It is a ranking, not a percentage of anything. A 90 means roughly one couple in ten scores higher than you there. A 27 means most couples score higher on that particular axis and lower on others.
Two things follow from that, and both matter.
The middle is normal. Half of all couples are, by definition, below the halfway mark on any given axis. That is arithmetic, not a judgment about a relationship.
The six categories disagree with each other, on purpose. Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter are each calculated separately. A couple can land at 90 on Mercury, meaning they talk easily, and at 27 on Moon, meaning they process feelings at different speeds. Both of those are true at once, and a single blended number would have hidden both of them.
For what it is worth, the highest overall alignment our tool has produced so far is an 82. Not a hundred. There is no hundred sitting there waiting for the right couple, because the scale is a ranking and somebody always has to be at the top of it.
The scoring is real, which means it can come back low in places. We do not have a version that flatters everyone and we are not going to build one — a score that always says strong connection is worth nothing to anybody. If you want a gift guaranteed to say you are perfect for each other, this is not it. If you want something true enough to actually talk about, it is.
The portrait itself never prints a number, by the way. That is deliberate. A figure hanging in a frame stops being a conversation and becomes a verdict. The numbers live in the optional Score Report instead, where there is room to explain what each one means.
For a friend
Friends are the hardest to buy for because you cannot fall back on obligation. What works is the thing that shows you paid attention.
If they are the one in your group who already knows their big three and brings up Mercury retrograde unprompted, an Individual Soul Portrait gives them something they will actually read rather than another object with a glyph on it.

The birth time problem, and why it should not stop you
This is where most people give up on the idea. They do not know the birth time and they do not want to ask, because asking gives away the surprise.
Order anyway. Leave the time blank.
Without a birth time, the rising sign, the houses, and the Midheaven are left off the portrait entirely. We do not guess, because a guessed time produces a guessed rising sign with about a one in twelve chance of being right, and printing a guess as a fact is worse than leaving a gap. The reading is built from the sun and the planets instead, which is most of the chart.
The moon is the one thing that needs saying. It moves far enough in a day that without a time it can land near the edge of a sign. When that happens, the portrait says so on the portrait itself rather than pretending otherwise.
You will get a real reading either way. You will just get a slightly fuller one if the time turns up.
What to actually do
Get their birth date, their birth city, and their birth time if you can. That is all you need.
