Most baby gifts are about the category. A onesie that says Little Leo. A mobile with a moon on it. A blanket embroidered with a sign. They are sweet, and they are the same gift every other Leo baby born this month is getting.
A birth chart is different. It is not the baby's sign. It is the whole sky at the exact minute and place they arrived, and no other child shares it unless they were born in the same hospital in the same minute.
What a baby birth chart actually is
Picture the sky the moment a baby is born. The Sun is somewhere in the zodiac, and so are the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the outer planets. At the same time, one sign is rising over the eastern horizon where they were born. That is the Rising sign, or Ascendant.
A birth chart is a drawing of all of that at once: every planet in its sign, to the degree, arranged around the horizon of that one place at that one minute. The Sun sign is one line on it. The chart is the whole page.
Why the birth time matters more for a baby than for anyone else
For an adult gift, we will build a portrait without a birth time. The Rising sign and houses are left off, the reading is built from the Sun and planets, and it is still a real reading.
For a newborn, we do not do that, and the reason is simple. The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, and it is the part of the chart that most separates one baby from another born the same week. Two babies born on the same day often share a Sun sign, a Moon sign and most of their planets. The Rising sign and the exact degrees are what make them different people on paper.
The good news is that a newborn's birth time is almost always known, and known exactly. It is on the hospital record, the birth certificate and usually the birth announcement. It is the easiest birth time anyone will ever have to find.
How it should be written for a newborn
This is the part most chart products get wrong, if they write anything at all.
An adult reading is allowed to talk about the past. What you have learned, what has been hard, what you have come through. None of that belongs on a baby's wall. A newborn has no past. So a baby portrait has to be written forward: who this child is setting out to be, what they are likely to reach for, how they may give and take care.
A few rules we hold to, and would hold any baby chart to:
No hardship. Saturn is traditionally the planet of lessons and limits. On an adult chart it can speak about what was withheld. On a baby's chart it describes what will be asked of them as they grow, and it ends somewhere hopeful.
No predictions. Nothing about careers, health or fortune. A chart describes temperament, not destiny.
No baby talk. It will be read aloud in the nursery for years, and then read by the child themselves. It should be tender but grown-up enough to still hold up at twelve.
Specific to the child. The degree of each planet, any retrogrades, and the Rising sign should shape the words, so that two babies with the same Sun sign do not read alike.
What goes on the portrait
Our Baby Soul Portrait puts the full chart wheel and planet table on the left, and seven short readings on the right, each under its own heading:
- The Little Light for the Sun
- The Tender Heart for the Moon
- How You Love for Venus
- Your Spark for Mars
- Your Gifts for Jupiter
- Your Growing Edges for Saturn
- Your First Hello for the Rising sign
It opens and closes with the name of whoever gave it, so it reads as a message from Mom and Dad, a grandparent, or a friend. It prints on cream rather than the navy of our other portraits, and the framed version comes in natural oak.
Who it is for
A baby shower. It is the gift nobody else will bring, and it will still be on the wall long after the swaddles are outgrown. If you are ordering before the baby arrives, wait until you have the birth time.
New grandparents. It is a way to put their name next to the grandchild's first sky.
A first birthday or a christening. By then the details are easy to get, and the portrait can go straight into a nursery that is already set up.
What you need to order
The baby's full name, their date of birth, their exact time of birth, and the city they were born in. Then the name you want printed as the giver.
Everything is calculated from real planetary positions for that date, time and place, and made to order. Digital arrives by email. Prints and framed pieces ship free within the United States.
